Paul Revere: a hero of the American Revolution
Born in Boston on 1st January 1735, Paul Revere is one of the most recognisable figures in American history. Celebrated as a patriot of the American Revolution and commended for his role in warning colonial leaders of British troop movements, Revere was also a master silversmith whose values guided many artisans and civic-minded individuals in colonial America.
Early Life and Craftsmanship
Paul Revere was the third child of Apollos Rivoire, a French Huguenot, and Deborah Hichborn, daughter of a local artisan family. Rivoire changed his name to Paul Revere sometime after immigrating to America.
Before moving permanently to Boston, the young Apollos went to Guernsey to stay with his uncle where he trained and worked as a silversmith, crafting fine objects including traditional Guernsey loving cups. This experience created a tangible link between Guernsey’s silversmithing tradition and the Revere family legacy.
Having completed his apprenticeship, Paul Revere Jr. became one of Boston’s most accomplished silversmiths. His workshop produced domestic and ceremonial silverware, including the Sons of Liberty Bowl, created in 1768 and now held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Commissioned by colonial activists, the bowl commemorates resistance to British taxation.
The Midnight Ride
Revere’s place in history was sealed on the night of 18th April 1775, when his Midnight Ride warned John Hancock and Samuel Adams of the imminent advance of British troops. His actions helped mobilise local militias and contributed to the opening engagements of the American Revolutionary War.
Paul Revere died on 10th May 1818. His legacy as a patriot, messenger and craftsman endures, exemplifying the union of skilled trade and civic responsibility that shaped the American Revolution.
Now that the exhibition has concluded, we are pleased to offer a limited number of this Cinderella sheet for purchase.
